It looks like America’s fear of being dependent on the Middle East and other unstable regions throughout the world to supply us with oil may be eased by our friendly Canadian neighbors.
Thanks in large part to the massive amounts of crude oil found in the Oil Sands of Alberta, Canada overtook Saudi Arabia as America’s single largest supplier of crude oil during 2005, and will apparently hold the top spot for at least the next two decades. According to Guy Caruso, administrator of the U.S. Energy Information Administration, “the projects in Fort McMurray and Athabasca [Canada] will ensure that Canada will remain in the top spot until 2030.”
This news comes on the heels of a State of the Union address that was partially centered around the idea that America needs to dramatically reduce its dependence on foreign (particularly Middle Eastern) oil. And, thanks to the fact our Government certainly isn’t making nice with many of the world’s largest oil exporters, I think it’s safe to assume we’re going to need to reduce our dependence sooner rather than later.
Thankfully, considering Canada’s stable government, vast oil reserves/future supplies and its proximity, this current scenario of Canada being America’s largest oil supplier may be the best solution short of finding home grown alternative energy sources.
That being said, don’t expect this news to bring you any relief at the pump. As global demand for oil continues to increase while supplies continue to decrease, things are only going to get worse, no matter who’s supplying our oil.

Maybe we should put illegal tariffs and duties on our oil going into america and rob u guys blind just like you did with our softwood lumber.
stop relying on other countries america. When they turn on you, you’re gonna have nobody to get crap from.
In a global economy, you kind of have to rely on other countries. I hate to break it to you, but no country is self sufficient.
The big problem with Canada supplying all of our Oil Sands oil to the US is that we then have to import from the Middle East. Most of what we produce is promised to the US, which means that what we need comes from elsewhere. It’s a little backward, but that’s how trade agreements work. Looks like it’s Canada that needs to make the push to go green, and stop relying on foreign oil.
That’s an interesting point that I hadn’t heard before. By any chance, do you happen to know the percentage of Canadian oil that stays in Canada?
How long until the United States bombs Canada?
Probably never.
There is 0% of oil from Alberta that stays in Canada it goes 100% to the US
