According to a report published on CNN.com, former United States Interior Secretary Gale Norton has been hired by Royal Dutch Shell as a general counsel for the multi-billion dollar company’s “unconventional resources” division.
According to the article, Norton will provide and coordinate legal services for the division of Shell that is responsible for the development and testing of technologies that allow the company to get oil from uncommon and remote sources.
Norton, one of President Bush’s original Cabinet members and the first woman to head the Interior Department, stepped down in March of this year from her position as Interior Secretary, thanks in no small part to her frequent clashes with environmentalists.
Some of the issues that sparked the biggest battles included the opening of part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil drilling, the reopening of Yellowstone National Park to snowmobiles and her relaxed stance on logging.
I’m sure Norton’s new position will do nothing but add fuel to the fire regarding many people’s belief that the Bush Administration has been and continues to be in the pocket of big oil companies.
If you can’t beat them, join them. Or something like that.
