The oils that are used in most of these products can be produced from plants. Of course growing the raw materials will be much more expensive than just pumping oil out of the ground, but with serious recycling and less wasteful use of plastics, we will no need for society to go back to the 19th century. That being said, I imagine there are going to be some real nasty growing pains, as there is a lot of resistance to change.

Given a choice between changing their mind or changing the world, most people choose the world.

Here's a short video I made about petroleum-based product, the decline in production and an emphasis on how it will impact our agriculture:

So, everything will have to change to be done more cleanly, intelligently, and with less waste.

As if change weren't happening every day at a blazing pace already.

That's the whole deal about our economy though. Since everything we touch, essentially, is made from a petroleum by-product i.e. our clothing, desks, chairs, cars, shampoo, cups, saucers, computers, then that leaves our entire society in a vulnerable position. We are spending petro-dollars. Everything in our society, as a whole, is based not on the old gold standard, not on our manufacturing prowess, not on our exports.... but on oil. We are totally dependent or foreign oil for everything we are and have become. It's not nearly just about gas. It's everything that is made from it - which is just about everything except cotton, wool and grains.
We're screwed.
