Fuel Economy Tip – Watch Your Speed

Today’s tip is sort of an addendum to my previous tip regarding driving the speed limit.  I have received several emails and comments regarding this post, so I’d like to take the opportunity to clarify.

What I should have said was to drive the speed limit when the conditions allow for it.

What I mean by this is, it’s unrealistic and sometimes unsafe to try and drive the speed limit at all times.  For example, if you are driving on an interstate where the speed limit is 55 mph but everyone around you is driving 70, it’s probably unrealistic and unsafe to travel at mph.

Now, does that mean you have to drive 70 to keep up with traffic?  Probably not, especially if you stay towards the right lanes.

However, if you’re traveling down the same road and there isn’t much traffic, is it safe and reasonable for you to travel the speed limit?  Absolutely!

So, when the opportunity presents itself, please try and drive the speed limit, especially considering that for every 5 mph you travel over 60 mph, you are decreasing your fuel economy by 6%.
